Famous Quotes

"Just as we may eventually take the brain apart, neuron by neuron, and never find the model, we may discover that true AI came into existence without anyone ever developing a coherent model of reality or an unambiguous theory of intelligence. Reality, with all its ambiguities, does the job just fine. It may be that our true destiny as a species is to build an intelligence that proves highly successful, whether we understand how it works or not." GEORGE DYSON

"Let the future tell the truth, and evaluate each one according to his work and accomplishments. The present is theirs; the future, for which I have really worked, is mine." Nikola Tesla

"We can lick gravity, but sometimes the paperwork is overwhelming." Werhner Von Braun

"One can measure the importance of a scientific work by the number of earlier publications rendered superfluous by it." David Hilbert

"Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality." Hermann Minkowski

"The average user doesn't give a damn what happens, as long as (1) it works and (2) it's fast." Daniel J. Bernstein

"Divide each difficulty into as many parts as is feasible and necessary to resolve it." Rene Descartes

"A man may imagine things that are false, but he can only understand things that are true, for if the things be false, the apprehension of them is not understanding." Isaac Newton

"The techniques I developed for studying turbulence, like weather, also apply to the stock market." Mandelbrot

"A theory has only the alternative of being right or wrong. A model has a third possibility: it may be right, but irrelevant." Manfred Eigen

"In relativity, movement is continuous, causally determinate and well defined, while in quantum mechanics it is discontinuous, not causally determinate and not well defined." David Bohm

"In 12 or 15 years, there will be routine, affordable space tourism not just in the U.S. but in a lot of countries." Burt Rutan

"What we observe as material bodies and forces are nothing but shapes and variations in the structure of space." Erwin Schrodinger

"The Earth is the cradle of humanity, but mankind cannot stay in the cradle forever." Konstantin Tsiolkovsky

"The biological task of science is to provide the fully developed human individual with as perfect a means of orientating himself as possible. No other scientific ideal can be realised, and any other must be meaningless." Ernst Mach

""It worked." (said after witnessing the first atomic detonation)." Robert Oppenheimer

"If you didn't have any conscious beings in the world, there really wouldn't be morality but with consciousness that you have it." Roger Penrose

"Reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." Richard Feynman

George Ayittey on Cheetahs vs. Hippos

Same thing that is occuring in America today. A sort of global leveling of the playing field....nooooo, there is a better way though.

Capitalism and Democracy in China

China is catching up to America, but they never will become equal to America until they get rid of their totalitarianism and start moving toward a "power to the people" political direction, which is going to have to happen given the technological revolution that has been occuring there over the last 20 years thanks to America the Great. That in combination with China getting in touch with it's historical Confuscian roots will spell the end of Communism for good in the Eastern part of the world.

Look how strong and free Hong Kong is still going, even 10 years after Chinese took control from Britain (1997-2007)....I think that Hong Kong's success is changing Chinese governance from within:

Wow to This Quote

Alexander wept when he heard from Anaxarchus that there was an infinite number of worlds; and his friends asking him if any accident had befallen him, he returns this answer:

"Do you not think it a matter worthy of lamentation... that when there is such a vast multitude of worlds, we have not yet conquered one?'" -- Plutarch, historian, 1st century

Z-Spirals in the Imaginary Plane

It is in the imaginary spirals that some fractals are made, give or take some other iterative or exponential functions:

EM Frequency and Index of Refraction

This shows the dispersion of white light through a prism at various frequencies. The higher the frequency, the more the light gets refracted. As seen below, the further light travels through a medium, (1) the more absorbed it gets and (2) the more it travels in the direction of refraction.

This is also analogous to what happens when light travels through a planetary atmosphere or refracts off the interstellar medium from the light escaping from entire galaxies.

This process being described here also should act as a Universal Low-Pass Filter, perhaps contributing to a small degree to some of the observed universal dopler redshift that astronomers are observing due to expansion of spacetime according to Hubble's Law.
